What Viewing Distance Do You Need for P5, P8, P10 LED Displays?

The most common mistake in LED display specification is selecting a pixel pitch without calculating whether it provides adequate image quality at the actual viewing distance of the installation. This guide gives you the exact viewing distance requirements for common outdoor display pitches.

The Science of Visual Resolution

The human eye's angular resolution — the smallest detail it can distinguish — is approximately 1 arc minute (1/60 of a degree). At any given viewing distance, there is a minimum object size below which the eye cannot resolve separate elements.
For an LED display, when the pixel pitch subtends less than 1 arc minute of visual angle, individual pixels are no longer distinguishable and the image appears continuous.
Formula: Minimum viewing distance (m) = Pixel pitch (mm) × 1,000 / tan(1/60 × π/180) ≈ Pixel pitch (mm) × 3,438 / 1,000 ≈ Pixel pitch (mm) × 3.4
This gives a comfortable viewing distance. A minimum acceptable distance (where some viewers with excellent vision may see pixels) is approximately pixel pitch × 2.

Real-World Application Mapping

City Center Retail Billboard

Target audience: Pedestrians and slow-moving traffic at 8-25m distance. Recommended pitch: P5 or P6 — sufficient resolution for close pedestrian viewing; appropriate brightness for outdoor.

Highway Billboard

Drivers at 50-200m approach distance. Recommended pitch: P10 to P16 — no need for finer pitch as the minimum viewing distance exceeds P10's comfortable viewing range.

Sports Stadium Perimeter Board

Players and close-stand spectators at 10-30m; broadcast cameras at 50-150m. Recommended pitch: P8 for perimeter boards (broadcast distance drives the spec); P5-P6 for end-zone scoreboards (closer fans).

Indoor Conference or Event Screen

Audience at 6-20m from screen. Recommended pitch: P3.076–P4 for 6-10m; P4–P5 for 10-20m.

A Practical Calculation Example

Installation: A retail advertising display on the exterior of a shopping center entrance. The nearest pedestrians will be 4m from the screen; the majority of viewers will be 8-15m away.
  ⦿ Minimum viewing distance requirement: 4m
  ⦿ At 4m minimum, the maximum acceptable pitch = 4m ÷ 2 = 2m per mm → pitch ≤ 2.0mm
  ⦿ However, for the majority at 8-15m: pitch ≤ 8m ÷ 2 = 4mm
Decision: For 4m minimum viewing, P2.5 is required to avoid visible pixelation for the closest viewers. If budget is a constraint and the 4m position is not a primary viewing position (e.g., directly at the store entrance where people are not standing still), P3.076 is an acceptable compromise.
